Best Local-First Desktop Starter Kit for Indie Gumroad Sellers

The problem

Solo developers who sell software through Gumroad have a particular set of needs that general starter templates ignore. You want to charge once, hand over a license key, ship a Windows installer, keep customer data off your servers because you do not have any, and still support a few hundred buyers on your own. Most template lists rank frameworks by popularity, which tells you very little about whether you can actually run a business on them.

Full disclosure: I make the Tauri Local-AI Starter Kit, and this page is written from that position. So it is organized around the questions you should ask any kit, with the kit's answers and its weak points stated plainly. The kit is a developer kit for local-first Windows desktop apps with a built-in local assistant, delivered as a ZIP with a commercial license. It is tested on Windows only, which is the first filter to apply.

Question 1: can it take payment without a server of yours?

A solo seller should not have to run a licensing backend. The kit's optional module verifies Gumroad license keys with a single request on an Activate click, using only the product id, so no seller token is needed in the app, and then works offline from a tamper-protected local record. Lemon Squeezy is supported as a second store. The cost of that simplicity is that checks happen only at activation, so a refund is noticed only when someone activates.

Question 2: does it ship installers you can sell?

The pipeline builds Windows x64 and ARM64 installers natively, smoke-tests them and publishes only the installers and a checksum file to a public repo while your source stays private. Installers are unsigned, so buyers will see a SmartScreen warning until you add a certificate, and you should tell them about it on your product page.

Question 3: is user data handled safely from the start?

The kit keeps everything in one SQLite file with forward-only migrations that take a .bak first, daily backups with one-click restore, and export in open formats. Every outbound feature is off until the user opts in. For a seller with no support team, data that never leaves the computer is also a lot fewer incidents to answer for.

Question 4: will the license let you build a business?

You can ship unlimited apps of your own, commercially, and modify the code as you like. You cannot resell or redistribute the kit itself. The price is $199 once, with lifetime updates for all 1.x releases and a 14-day refund; the full terms are in the LICENSE file inside the ZIP, and those are the terms that apply.

Who should look elsewhere

If you need other operating systems today, a no-code builder, a hosted web app template or a large library of prebuilt modules, this is not the kit. It ships one example module on purpose.

When the alternatives are the better choice

The bare create-tauri-app template is the better choice if your app is small, if you want your own backend design or if you simply enjoy laying the foundations yourself. It costs nothing and carries no opinions, and you pay for that with the time it takes to build storage, backups, consent controls, licensing and release builds.

An Electron boilerplate is the better choice if your whole team already lives in JavaScript and you want the shortest toolchain, since it generally does not ask for Rust. Check what a given boilerplate actually includes before you rely on it. Building from scratch is the better choice if your requirements are unusual enough that any kit would fight you, or if learning every layer is part of the point. In all three cases you take on the plumbing yourself, so the real comparison is how many weeks of it you want to own.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Licensing for Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy, storage, backups and a Windows release pipeline are already built.
  • User data stays on the user's computer, so you run no data servers.
  • A commercial license covers unlimited apps of your own.
  • One-time price with lifetime updates for all 1.x releases.

Cons

  • It is tested on Windows only, with installers unsigned by default.
  • You need Node 24 or newer, Rust and the C++ build tools to build the desktop app.
  • It ships one example module, not a library of ready-made ones.
  • This recommendation comes from the kit's maker, so verify it against your own requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Is the kit a good fit if I already sell on Gumroad?

It is designed around that case: Gumroad license keys are verified with the product id, and the licensing module is included in the base kit.

Does the kit include a hosted service?

No. It is a ZIP you build yourself. The apps you make run on your customers' computers, with a local model through Ollama and an optional bring-your-own-key cloud provider that is off by default.

Can I see how a finished app looks?

Yes. Burrow, a private budget and journal desktop app sold on the same store, is built on the same foundation.

What if it does not suit me?

There is a 14-day refund, and after a refund the commercial license ends.
